High Impact Keyword Secrets for Overwhelmed Pinterest Marketers

Sharing is caring!

Do you struggle to get any real traction in your Pinterest Marketing? Maybe you are just starting out and need to know where to begin. This is the blog post to learn how to start key-wording for Pinterest Marketing Beginners.

Keywords are key(pun absolutely intended- lol) to a strong foundation in Pinterest marketing. I recently helped a client overhaul her boards on Pinterest by using keyword research and putting it to use in every title and description.

As a craft blogger and pattern creator she had early success in her Pinterest marketing journey but suddenly traffic was plummeting and after trying many different things she decided to hire help and use my Pinterest audit service to revisit and overhaul the use of keywords in her marketing. This combined with some analytic research and good pinning practices turned her plummeting traffic around in just 3 months (a really average turnaround time to see changes in Pinterest marketing for her industry.

Where Keywords Fit into your Pinterest Marketing Plan

I often like to compare Pinterest marketing to a house or business building in this case. Keywords are the cement that you build your foundation on. There are 4 pillars that hold up the rest of your structure.

  1. Your profile
  2. Your Boards
  3. Your Goal
  4. Your Analytics

Your pins are avenues through which your customer can enter into your business (blog, website, e-commerce storefront, etc.) These pillars and the pins you place as a signpost pointing to your business content use keywords as their foundation. Keywords tell Pinterest the information it needs to match you to people searching for your content.

How do you find your keywords on Pinterest?

I’m so glad you asked. The first thing you need to do is look at your current audience or ideal audience and any content you already have.

Step 1. Start with what you already know.

Write down a brainstorm list of words people might search that fit into those categories.  Here are a few questions to get the words flowing.

  • What problem are you solving for your audience?
  • Why is your audience on Pinterest?
  • What questions does your audience frequently ask?

Step 2. Organize Your Keywords

Now Group your words into several categories maybe 8-12. {pssst. These categories can be the titles of your first boards! } If you already have 12 content pillars that you have planned to be monthly topics let that guide you. I suggest putting these categories into a spreadsheet. You can put the Category at the top and the Keyword Phrases underneath.

Step 3. Use Pinterest Search to Round Out Your Keyword Options

Use the search bar to see what it suggests when you use those words.

Pro Tip:
You should also take a look at the pins and make sure that they are matching what you visualize a keyword to indicate.  If you search for face masks and intend to sell facial cleansing masks you might need to alter your keyword in light of the current pandemic.
Here there is a perfect match between the keyword and the search results.

Round out your options by adding the letters of the alphabet after each of your high-level keywords. If you make wood flowers you might start with wood flower bouquet a, …b, …c, …d, and so on. Write down all of the keywords that apply to what you do. If you’re not sure how it applies click on the option and see what comes up.

Other places to search for keywords

Continue to round out your keywords as long as you are marketing. You can get even more ideas by visiting these resources:

  • Use the Pinterest Trends tool and scroll down to see the related trends and trending on Pinterest Reports.
  • Check out the Pinterest Predicts Tool and see if there is anything that can intersect with your brand.
  • Use Google Search Trends to fact check the kinds of things your audience is searching remember to make sure and type these words into Pinterest and see if they are actually being searched on Pinterest.

Time Saving Hack

A tool that might help you round out your keywords on Pinterest more quickly is Pin Inspector.  This is a recent tool that is working beautifully for me in my business and is well worth the small expense when you consider how central Keyword research is to Pinterest Marketing. Please note that this is not necessary as you can do the same work for free.

P.S. One More Top Tip because You are Awesome

Keywords tell the Pinterest Algorithm what your pin is all about. You want it to have every chance to gather information about your pin so that when people start searching for a solution to their problem your pin is shown to them, it could also show up in their natural feed where maybe they have interacted with similar content before. It’s important to educate the Pinterest algorithm about your content and your specific pins so that your profile, pins, and boards are recommended to your ideal audience. People may or may not read descriptions and titles because of this you should avoid keyword stuffing and do your best to sound natural this also helps to prevent other people or the spam bots from reporting your hard work as spam.
